Galena Park ISD alumni Nathaniel "Skippy" Collins and Jimmy Dickey, as well as long-time Galena Park ISD Athletic Director Ed Warken will be honored during the district’s fourth Distinguished Alumni Banquet set for Thursday, Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at North Shore Senior High School, 353 North Castlegory.
Collins is a 1954 graduate of Galena Park High School who earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston and his master’s degree from Boston College. He is currently teaching at his alma mater – Galena Park High School. Collins worked his way through college as an employee of Houston Lighting and Power. His professional career includes many years as a teacher in GPISD as well as assistant superintendent for business in Dickinson ISD and West Orange Cove ISD.
Dickey graduated from Galena Park High School in 1952. The All-State quarterback for the Yellow Jackets went on to play college football for the University of Houston. Dickey spent several years coaching at local high schools, including Galveston Ball, C.E. King, and Memorial before beginning his collegiate coaching career. Dickey served as an assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma, the University of North Carolina and the University of Florida. He served as the head coach of Kansas State University from 1978-1985. He was honored as the National Coach of the Week in 1978 and Big Eight Coach of the Year in 1982 when he took the Wildcats to the Independence Bowl. After a collegiate career that included 10 bowl games Dickey returned to GPHS and coached the Yellow Jackets from 1993-1998. He will be introduced during the event by Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale.
Warken has spent the past 19 years serving as Athletic Director for Galena Park ISD. He is past president of the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association and was inducted into the organization’s Hall of Honor in 2004. Warken brought 12 years of coaching experience in Michigan and the Houston area with him to GPISD. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and his master’s from Michigan State University. Warken’s experience is vital in making GPISD the athletics powerhouse that it is today. Under his guidance, district athletic teams are perennial playoff contenders in many sports.
