Beesley Awarded Legion of Merit

James Beesley, Director of Transportation, was recently awarded the Legion of Merit by the United States Army for his sustained efforts in positions of great responsibility, including serving as the senior military representative at Reliant Park in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, commanding the 321st Sustainment Brigade, and his service as Chief of Staff of the 90th Regional Readiness Command.
The Legion of Merit was established by Act of Congress on July 20, 1942 and is awarded to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States or a friendly foreign nation who has distinguished himself or herself by exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.  It ranks in precedence just after the Silver Star but above the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Beesley is a 29-year veteran of the US Army, and continues his service as Deputy commander of a Combat Engineer Brigade in Montgomery, Alabama.
Beesley began his career in Galena Park ISD in 1996 as a fifth grade teacher. He then taught at Cunningham Middle School for several years before being named the Director of Transportation in January 2006. Beesley has served on one tour of Bosnia and one of Afghanistan during his career in GPISD.
