GPISD Schools are Beating the Odds in Student Achievement

We are proud to announce that Galena Park ISD has ten campuses recognized as NCEA Higher Performing Schools in the areas of reading, writing, math, social studies and science. The National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA) released the 2010 NCEA Higher Performing Schools List for Texas on January 27, 2011. NCEA identifies Higher Performing Schools based on two measures: growth of students at the school and absolute achievement of students at the school. The list identifies NCEA Higher Performing Schools those elementary, middle, and high schools that have consistently outperformed their peers that serve similar student populations--and recognizes their achievement in bringing more students to college and career readiness than expected.

A Higher Performing Schools rating is significant because only eight percent of Texas' public schools earn this identification. By comparison, roughly fifty percent of public schools earn "exemplary" or "recognized" ratings by the Texas education Agency. With nearly half of our campuses being mentioned among the top eight percent of Texas' public schools, Galena Park ISD stands proud among their peers in the Texas public education system.

The NCEA offers two ratings: Growth and Commended. It is possible to be recognized in either or both categories. To earn a growth rating, a campuses students must earn significantly higher scores on the TAKS test than the previous year, and, they must have above typical growth for their expected demographic group. The commended rating looks at the percentage of students reaching Commended on the TAKS. Additionally, this performance level must be maintained for three consecutive years in order to make the NCEA Higher Performing Schools List.

Our schools being recognized on the NCEA Higher Performing Schools Lists shows that our students can achieve at high standards and that continuous school improvement is one of our district's top priorities. Galena Park ISD and the Board of Trustees are very proud of the hard work and dedication that these schools have reflected.
