Students Put Pedal to the Metal

Students in the Galena Park ISD Career and Technical Education Department's Metal Trades classes attended the American Welding Society (AWS) of Houston's Student Night on February 15th at Brady's Landing. Fifty-three students from GPISD attended the largest delegation of students at the event. Students were treated to a seafood dinner, and then enjoyed a presentation about welding careers. The main topic was "Welding of Motorcycle Frames" with an appearance by Dave Atkinson, the service manager at Mancuso Harley Davidson. Students learned how different welding techniques have contributed to the newer, modern motorcycles currently in production. They also heard Kent Weeks, owner of Lucky Devil Metal Works, speak about 'specialty welding' and welding custom motorcycles. Students were encouraged to apply for the scholarships that AWS awards. Custom bikes were on display for students to admire, and several GPISD students won door prizes. Our students had the opportunity to meet professionals in the welding industry and witness their passion for their careers.
