Girls Up to the Challenge of Rapid Web Design

[Houston, TX] On Friday, November 18th San Jacinto College - North Campus hosted The Rapid Web Design Challenge for the college district’s local high schools. Students from the CTE Graphic Design classes represented North Shore. Each team was given a web site to re-design in a two-hour period. Out of the eighteen student teams that competed, North Shore students placed 3rd and 1st. The third place team consisted of Abby Perez and Francisca Silguero. The first place team winners, Nohemy Herrera and Jaime Matthews were awarded $250 scholarships, an underwater camera and an iPod. After the event, a delighted Jamie Matthews exclaimed, “my mom could understand what I did when I was in band – she heard my music. She could understand why I wanted to be in Honor Society because of the induction ceremony. Now she finally understands why I wanted to be in [the] Advanced Graphic Design and Illustration class and to earn my degree in college. She saw my 1st place award and was amazed when I won a scholarship!” Nodding in agreement, Nohemy Herrera said, “My parents wonder the same thing. My brother is at college right now studying business. Money is so tight... my parents could not see how I could succeed by studying Graphic Design in college. But now they can see how we create Web content, plus, winning a scholarship really helped!” It seem apparent that this is only the beginning for these students. “Jamie, Nohemy, and the other graphic design students have really zoomed ahead with their portfolios because of this competition!” proudly beamed Barbara Kistner, North Shore Senior High’s web and graphic design teacher. “I really appreciate San Jacinto College for this opportunity. The competition really impressed on the students what it means to meet a rigorous deadline. I love and am so proud of my students. We had all boys, all girls and mixed teams competing, but the girls’ teams seemed to rule the day!”

Next the students will return their attention to the school’s web site. Ms. Kistner’s Graphic Design and Animation students create content and maintain the site. They now plan to add more interactive features to the student designed site.
