GPHS Football Game Updates
New Caney Porter
The freshmen Yellowjackets traveled north last week to take on a tough New Caney Porter team in a muddy, slugfest that ended in a 0-21 defeat. The Jackets grinded and showed determination and toughness in poor conditions against a formidable opponent. The offense was led by Jonathan Gutierrez, Roger Barquera and Justin Leal. Alex Sims, Jacob Johnson, Tim Marshall and Freddy Teran made some hard hits on defense. The freshman will match up against North Shore Wednesday the 6th at GPISD Stadium for their final game of the season.
Junior Varsity Team:
The Yellowjacket JV football team experienced a 26-0 against New Caney Porter.
The varsity football experienced a brutal 51-2 loss on the road at Randall Reed Stadium against New Caney Porter last Friday night. The offense struggled to get anything started against a stout Porter defense mustering only 143 total offensive yards. The defense fought hard holding Porter to four scores. Daniel Jimenez forced a fumble and Miguel Muniz recovered. The Jackets did manage to force into three field goal attempts which were all missed. Brice Hernandez led G.P. with 10 plus tackles, 3 sacks and a safety. Luis Sanchez, Derrick Sampson, Brandon Salas and Austin Altwein each had 5 plus tackles. The Yellowjackets will host the Wisdom Generals on November 8th for Senior Night. The game will start at 7:00 pm at GPISD Stadium.
Goose Creek Memorial
The freshmen team hosted Goose Creek Memorial on the 24th of October. It was a defensive battle, and the Jackets were led by the tough play of Alex Sims, Timothy Marshall, and Jacob Johnson. The offense did manage to put together some long drives behind the improved workings of the offensive line. Jonathan Gutierrez and Roger Barquera pushed the ball down field on the ground while Ivan Reyes gained yardage in the air, but at the end of the night it just wasn’t enough and GP lost 0-6 to GCM. Outstanding performers were Justin Leal, Jorge Garcia, Oscar Herrera, Vicente Villalobos, Timothy Marshall, Alex Sims, Jacob Johnson, and Ivan Reyes.
Junior Varsity Team:
The Yellowjacket JV football team lost to GCM 18-6.
The varsity team managed their second district win in a row with a 26-18 win against Goose Creek Memorial. The Jackets were led on offense by a strong ground game led by Amarion Kelly who rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown. Eli Quintero racked up another 80 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns. The ground game was anchored by the dominating play of the Yellowjacket offensive line. Julian Villalobos was the special teams star with his 3 extra points and 35 yard field goal. The defense forced two turnovers and held GCM to 205 total yards. Luis Sanchez, Derrick Sampson, and Brice Hernandez led in tackles. Miguel Muniz led the secondary with 5 tackles while Tony Zamora, Austin Altwein and Brandon Salas each added 4 tackles. Tony Zamora and Brandon Salas had 2 pass, break-ups as well.
The Yellowjackets battle New Caney Porter next week. The freshman and varsity teams will be on the road while the JV team will host Porter.
Austin High School
The varsity team defeated Austin High School 29-6 this last Saturday afternoon. The offense was led by the running back, Eli Quintero who rushed for 118 yards and scored 2 touchdowns. Amarion Kelly rushed for another 71 yards and threw for 123 yards. The receiving core was led by Patrick Hernandez and Caleb Aparicio; Fernando Martinez snagged a couple of receptions as well. The offensive line dominated the Austin defensive line as Richard Martinez, Antonio Alanis, and Bryan Chavarria made holes for the running back and gave time to the quarter back. The defense played well as a unit holding Austin to a single score, forcing a turnover, and holding the offense to under 200 total yards of offense. Ray Quintanilla and Austin Altwein made 10 tackles each. Luis Sanchez, Miguel Muniz, and Brandon Salas added another 7 tackles each. Mauricio Perez came up with a big time play in goal line stand. Tony Zamora had an interception; Brice Hernandez added 6 tackles and 3 rushes on the quarter back.
The Galena Park football team will play Goose Creek Memorial on Friday, October 25th for their Homecoming game. The game starts at 7:00 pm at the GPISD Stadium.
The freshmen Yellowjackets traveled to New Caney on October 3rd and lost a tough game 0-22. Ivan Reyes stood out with a great hustle play and Jonathan Gutierrez ran the ball hard for the Yellowjackets. The offensive line made improvements in the blocking schemes and the defensive did manage to make two big fourth down stops. Top performers were Jonathan Gutierrez, Alex Sims, and Jorge Garcia.
The freshman team hosted Bryan Rudder at Dement Stadium on October 17th and checked their first “W” in the win column as the rolled to a 26-0 victory. The defense scored the first touchdown on a scoop and score by Jesus Galvan. The defense proceeded to hold Bryan Rudder out of the end zone for four quarters behind the solid play of Jassy Medina, Ivan Reyes and Justin Leal. The energy of Jorge Garcia, Vicente Villalobos and Kailen Collums set the tone for the offense. Jonathan Gutierrez ran the ball well and scored a touchdown. Roger Barquera and Freddy Teran each added a touchdowns while Jesus Galarza tacked on two extra points.
The freshmen Yellowjackets hosted the Titans last Wednesday night in a tough 34-0 loss. The freshman battled but just couldn’t match up to the power of the Titans. Alex Sims played solid for the defense while Jonathan Gutierrez ran well for the offense. The freshman team will be at New Caney High School on October 3rd for a 5:00 pm kick-off.
Junior Varsity Team:
The Yellowjacket JV football lost to Port Arthur Memorial 26-8. They will be back on the field October 3rd at Dement Field.
The varsity football team fell short in their first district game versus the Port Arthur Memorial Titan by a score of 27-8 last Thursday night. The defense played a hard-fought game led by the tackling of Derrick Sampson, Austin Altwein and Brandon Salas. Derrick and Austin each recovered a fumble. Brice Hernandez and Luis Sanchez also made contributions to the Yellowjacket defensive play. The offense was led by Patrick Hernandez and his 100 yards receiving. Patrick’s touchdown reception accounted for the only Yellowjacket points on the board. The Yellowjackets look to rebound on Friday, October 4th against the New Caney Eagles. The game will start at 7:00 pm at Texan Drive Stadium in New Caney.
The Yellow Jacket Freshmen football team took on Dayton last night at Dement Stadium. The Jackets played a tough game against the Broncos despite a 14-40 loss. The Jackets had some big plays from Jonathan Gutierrez, Jonathan Renteria, and Jaziel Medina. Jorge Garcia, Vicente Villalobos, Justin Leal and Ivan Reyes also had a gritty performance. The defensive stand out of the game was Jaziel Medina and Jonathan Gutierrez earned the offensive player of the game. The freshmen Jackets will be at Baytown Lee on Wednesday September 11th.
Junior Varsity Team:
The JV football team’s game was cancelled.
The Galena Park Yellowjackets suffered a tough 51-7 loss to Dayton on Friday night. The offense struggled mightly scoring only 7 points. Caleb Apperecio scored the only touchdown on a pass from Amarion Kelly. The defense fought and scraped to keep the Jackets in the game forcing 5 fumbles and recovering one. Michael Gaitan, Luis Sanchez, and Brandon Salas lead the defense recording 20 plus tackles between the three. Brice Hernandez contributed 5 solo tackles and 3 tackles for loss. Dallas Blate and Leo Garcia both put pressure on the quarterback resulting in several hurried plays. The Yellowjackets will be on the road Thursday, November 6th at Stallworth Stadium in Baytown as they match up against Baytown Lee at 7:00 pm.

The Galena Park Football Program would like to thank all of those who turned out to watch the Yellowjackets put a beat down on the Pasadena Eagles this last Saturday. All three teams claimed victories over the Eagles starting with the sub-varsity wins on Thursday evening and ending with the varsity domination Saturday evening.
The Galena Park freshman team opened the 2019 season Thursday night at Pasadena High School. The game was a tough and muddy affair that ended with a Yellowjacket victory by a score of 24-8. The Yellowjackets scored during the first quarter of play on a long touchdown run by Devonta Lumpkin. The Jackets scored again late in the second quarter on a pass from Roger Barquera to Juan Garcia giving GP a 12-8 lead at intermission. The scoring barrage continued in the third as Jonathan Renteria returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a TD. The dye was cast and the Jackets went on to score off a pick 6 by Ivan Reyes. Defensive stand outs for the game were Alex Sims, Gabriel Gutierrez and Jonathan Gutierrez. Offensive stand outs were Roger Barquera, Devonta Lumpkin, Jorge Garcia, Timothy Marshall and Vicente Villalobos. The freshman team will be hosting the Dayton Broncos at 5:00 pm next Thursday at Dement Field.
Junior Varsity Team:
The JV football team defeated the Eagles 14-8 on Thursday evening here at Dement Field. The JV team will travel to Dayton next Thursday, September 5th for a 5:00 pm kickoff.
The Galena Park Yellowjackets opened their season at Pasadena Memorial Stadium where they dominated the Eagles 49-6. The offense was led by running back Eli Quintero, who rushed for 100 yards and 4 touchdowns. Quarterback, Amarion Kelly added another 94 rushing yards to the GP total and 123 passing yards. Pat Hernandez and Caleb Aparicio led the team in receptions while Fernando Martinez tallied a receiving touchdown. The offensive line dominated the Eagles for four quarters providing holes for the rushers and time for the Kelly to pick apart the defense. Richard Martinez, Antonio Alanis, and Ivan Martinez anchored the O-line for the night. The defense held Pasadena to 189 total yards of offense and caused 5 turnovers. Derrick Sampson and Austin Altwein each had interceptions while Brice Hernandez and Altwein recovered fumbles for the Jackets. Michael Gaitan racked up 3 sacks two of which resulted in fumbles. Ivan Hernandez had 12 tackles followed closely by Luis Sanchez with 11 tackles. Landon Black, Dallas Blate and Brice Hernandez had 8, 6 and 6 tackles respectively. The Yellowjackets will be back on the field next Friday, September 6th hosting the Dayton Broncos at GPISD Stadium. The game will begin at 7:00 pm, come out wearing some black and gold to cheer on your Yellowjackets!
