• Galena Park Middle
    8th Black Team:
On All Hallows Eve the Hornets of Woodland Acres tried to put the fear of volleyball into the Jackets of Galena Park. Unfortunately the Hornets suffered a two set fright at the claws of the Jackets. WAMS had a 9 point lead in set one but suffered from miscommunications and second-guessing which ended in a 22-25 first set loss. The second set was controlled early by GPMS but the Hornets fought back from a 10 point deficit to give GP a game, but fell just short losing 21-25. Emily Zamora played well keeping everyone where they belonged and communicating.

    North Shore Middle
The WAMS volleyball teams competed against North Shore Middle School last Thursday.

    7th Gold Team:
The Gold team defeated North Shore in two sets, 25-21 and 25-6. The first set began slowly but the young Hornets improved their serving and passing to take control of the set. Tuesday Garcia served off 7 consecutive points in the second set, Camilia Esquivel served off 6 points, and Samantha Garza served off 5 points and earned the second set win. Abigail Esqueda served for the first time this season and scored 4 points.

    8th Black Team:
The Black team defeated North Shore in two sets, 25-1 and 25-16 giving the Hornets a 4-1 district record. The Hornets played their best match of the season in this two set victory. They played an all-around great match setting up the offense on multiple occasions. The Hornets even battled back from a 0-5 deficit in the second set. Andrea Correas continued to be a force at the service line.

    7th Gold Team:
The Gold team defeated CE King 25-16 and 25-19 pushing them to a 3-1 district record. The young Hornets struggled in the service game, but managed to run an offense often and attacked the ball when King made errors. Ashley Rangel led the team serving. Deyra Mata played aggressively on the net.

    8th Black Team:
The Black team played a thrilling three set match that the Hornets squeaked a victory from at the end. After playing a commanding first set winning 25-7, the Lady Hornets fell into their mad habits in the second losing 15-25 forcing a third set. The Hornets played a conservative third set forcing them to come from behind to win 16-14. Evelynn Tobias played a great all-around match while Andrea Correas served amazing throughout.

    7th Black Team:
The Black team defeated Cunningham in three sets by the scores of 25-7, 21-25, and 15-3. The Hornets jumped out fast on the Wildcats in the first set settling the set in a quick fashion. The second set went to the Wildcats, but it was a close contest. The Hornets played solid in set three and managed to shut down the Wildcat offense and take the match. Jossett Hernandez served off 6 points in the first set and Megan Lopez served off 8 consecutive points in the final set.

    8th Black Team:
The Black team won against the Wildcats in a two set 25-18 and 25-11 win. The third set was also played which WAMS won by a score of 15-5. The Lady Hornets won but Coach Slife is determined to clean up the twelve missed serves, poor communication, and rotation issues.

    Alice Johnson
    8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost all three sets to Alice Johnson Thursday night by scores of 22-25, 13-25, and 13-15.  The season opener was a picture of inconsistency by the Hornets but improvement could be seen.  The Hornets were plagued by doubts and nerves in the first set but seemed to relax as the match proceeded.  WAMS began to attach the ball in the second and third sets but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.  Ayana Oviedo and two kills and Emily Zamora served 100% and set up the offense as the setter.

    On Deck:
The Hornets will match volleyball skills against Anthony Aguirre Middle School Thursday, September 19th.
