Woodland Acres Girls Basketball Game Updates

  • Woodland Acres vs Gentry
    The Black team lost to Gentry Middle School by a score of 14-28. The Lady Hornets took an early 4-2 lead in the first quarter but gave up too many points in the remaining three quarters. The Hornets did manage to work their offense better this week and the hope is that growth will continue and a win will come next week against Galena Park Middle School. Andrea Coreas, Sofia Parrot, Emily Zamora, Evelynn Tobias and Natalie Nunez scored points.

    Woodland Acres vs Cunningham
    The Black team lost to Cunningham 15-32 on Thursday night. The Lady Hornets managed to score the first 6 points but then struggled to keep up with the Wildcat speed and athleticism. The Hornets kept the game within reach down by only four at halftime and kept the score close until the fourth quarter. Andrea Coreas led the team with 8 points while Ayana Oviedo, Evelynn Tobias, and Jocelyn Martinez also aided in the Hornet scoring.

    Woodland Acres vs Baytown
    7th Grade Black Team:
    The Black team was shutout by Baytown Junior High School last week. The Hornets gave up 20 points in the 0-20 loss. Baytown’s aggressive play stymied the Hornets and caused problems all game. Andrea Coreas continues to be the standout player for the Hornets as she leads her team with big hustle plays and her knowledge of the game.

    On Deck:
    The Hornets will play Cunningham Middle School in their next outing.

    Woodland Acres vs Highlands
    7th Grade Black Team:
    The Black team lost to Highlands Middle School 11-25. The team struggled early but managed to improve in the second half scoring 8 of their 11 points after the intermission. Andrea Coreas, Emily Zamora and Evelynn Tobias were the scorers for the Lady Hornets.

    On Deck:
    The Lady Hornets will match their skills against Baytown Middle School next week.

    Woodland Acres vs North Shore
    7th Grade Gold Team:
    The Gold team lost to North Shore Middle School by a score of 8-28.

    7th Grade Black Team:
    The Black team lost to North Shore Middle School by a score of 20-45.

    8th Grade Gold Team:
    The Gold team lost to North Shore 26-22.

    8th Grade Black Team:
    The Black team experienced their first loss to North Shore by a score of 20-45.  The Hornets failed to knock down the wide open shots the Mustang defense gave them and failed to stop the Mustangs on offense.  A combination of weak defense and a poor shooting night led to a loss for the Hornets.  Leslie Vasquez led the team in scoring with 11 points and Emily Camacho had her career best night with 6 points.

    On Deck:
    The WAMS basketball teams will be back in action after the Christmas break versus Alice Johnson Middle School.

    Woodland Acres vs North Shore
    7th Grade Black Team:
    The Black team lost to North Shore Middle School by a score of 7-38. The young Hornets were outmatched by North Shore's speed and outstanding defense, and the 38 points scored by a single Lady Mustang. Andrea Coreas and Evelynn Tobias scored for the Hornets.

    On Deck:
    The Lady Hornets will match their skills against Horace Mann Middle School next week.

    Woodland Acres vs Cedar Bayou
    7th Grade Black Team:
    The Black team played in a tough, lop-sided 13-31 loss before the Thanksgiving break. The Hornets scored eight points in the first half but scoring eluded them in the second half. The young Hornets were beat on the boards and in transition throughout the evening giving Coach Slife something to work on for the next matchup. Andreas Coreas, Natalie Nunez, Emily Zamora and Evelynn Tobias contributed to the scoring for the Hornets.

    8th Grade Gold Team:
    The Gold team lost to Cedar Bayou 12-22 after struggling from the field. The Lady Hornets had plenty of opportunities to score but just couldn’t find the basket. They did manage to play stalwart defense in the second and third quarters holding Cedar Bayou scoreless. Aslynn Hadnott, Ashley Garcia and Jazney Colon scored the points for WAMS with Jazney leading scorers with 6 points. Carolina Jimenez and Jazney Colon anchored the Hornet defense. Jazney was the MVP for the game.

    8th Grade Black Team:
    The Black team started slowly as they took a 2 to 14 deficit into the intermission. However, the second half was all about the Hornets as they stepped up the defense that led to scoring opportunities on offense. The Hornets held their opponent scoreless in the 4th quarter and outscored Cedar Bayou 13-2. Unfortunately, that 2 points was all Cedar Bayou would need to squeak out the win by a score of 16-15. Gabriella Munoz, Mya Avernathy, Rubi Montano, Genesis Heinaman, and Linisa Hernandez all contributed to the scoring. Maritza Sanchez and Kimberly Nieto joined Linisa and Genesis in holding Cedar Bayou to 2 points while Gabriella Munoz blocked shots, stole passes and played solid defense all game earning her MVP honors.

    On Deck:
    The Hornets will be competing against North Shore Middle School when they return from the Thanksgiving break.
