    GPHS vs Crosby
The Galena Park Lady Jackets versus Crosby High School.

    Freshman Team:
The freshman team played solid defense and ran a steady offense during their game Tuesday evening leading to a 30-15 win over the Crosby Cougars. Alyssa Hadnot led the young Jackets with 11 points.

    Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team had a slow first half taking only a single point lead into the intermission. But the Lady Jackets allowed only 14 points in the entire second half while more than doubling their halftime score. Galena Park defeated Crosby 45-29 led by the scoring and defense of Elaine Umana who scored 28 points.

    Varsity Team:
The varsity team had a terrible first half scoring only 9 points and allowing 32 points. With a 23 point deficit looming the Jackets stepped into a full court press that caused turnover after turnover by the Cougars. The result of this swarming defense was a 23 point third quarter by the Jackets and only 6 points by the Cougars. The fourth quarter commenced with a 32-39 Crosby lead but the Yellowjackets had momentum. Unfortunately the Cougars found an answer for the G.P. press and quickly ran away with the fourth quarter and the game. G.P. lost 38-51 led by the scoring and defense of Aniya Eason who scored 21 points and had 6 steals. Haven Hernandez had 4 blocked shots and Jackie Hidalgo added another 5 steals to the team’s stats for the evening.

    GPHS vs Texas City
The Lady Jackets began their second round of district play hosting Texas City this last Tuesday evening.

    Freshman Team:
The freshman game was the highlight for the evening as they dominated Texas City in a 53-33 win. Namia Phillips led the team and all players with 20 points.

    Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team found offense difficult to come by in the first half as they were held to 3 point in the first 16 minutes of the game. In the third quarter the Jackets showed improvement scoring 13 points but only managed another 6 in the fourth. Texas City pulled out the 22-30 victory. Elaine Umana led G.P. with 12 points.

    Varsity Team:
The varsity team started strong with some aggressive offensive play by Aniya Eason who scored and dished the Yellowjackets to an 11-7 first quarter lead. Some foul trouble and turnovers plagued the Lady Jackets in the second as they dropped in 13 points to Texas City’s 21 giving Texas City a four point lead at the end of two. The second half was all Texas City as G.P. continued to struggle with turnovers and rebounding. Galena Park simply gave up way too many second and third chance opportunities under the basket. Texas City finished the game with a 41-56 win. Daphne Bustos scored 13 points, had 3 steals and 2 assists. Aniya Eason scored 11 points had 5 steals, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 4 rebounds. Haven Hernandez had another stellar night blocking shots with 6 blocked shots and 6 rebounds.

    GPHS vs Galveston Ball
The G.P. Lady Jackets hosted the Tors of Galveston Ball this Tuesday night. The Lady Jackets went into the evening 2-1 in district, but the Tors’ post game evened the Jackets record to 2-2.

    Freshman Team:
The freshman team started a bit slow going down 5-6 at the end of the first quarter, but Trista Gutierrez came off the bench and ignited the Jacket offense. Trista would lead the Yellowjackets to victory behind her 15 points. Namia Phillips added another 12 points in the 31-28 nail-biter.

    Junior Varsity Team:
Galveston Ball couldn’t suit a JV team so the JV did not play.

    Varsity Team:
The varsity struggled in the first half containing Galveston Ball’s, big post player who dropped 21 points by intermission. G.P. just didn’t have the height or the bodies to stop her in the key. Galena Park started the second half in a box and one defense, which seemed to be effective at limiting the post scoring holding the big girl to 8 second half points. Unfortunately, the damage had been done and despite a short fourth quarter run the Jackets just couldn’t muster the points to get back in the game. Galena Park lost 34-45. Aniya Eason led the team with 22 points, Jayleen Montano had 5 rebounds and Jackie Hidalgo had 4 steals.
