Meet Ashlee Martinez, a 2011 graduate of Galena Park High School. While a student at GPISD, she was a member of the National Honor Society, graduated in the top 10% of her class, and played on her school’s varsity softball team. Upon graduation, Ashlee decided to continue her higher education at the University of Houston’s Central Campus to obtain a degree in Liberal Studies. She chose UH because it is a well-known, respected Tier One research university. A few other reasons were their outstanding educational record, flexible financial aid options, and convenient location. She also wanted to attend college in Houston because she is extremely close to her family, and she found the university more affordable. Ashlee selected Liberal Studies as her major because she plans to pursue a professional degree, such as a nursing degree. She believes this path will provide her with the necessary, practical skills applicable on the job and help her become fully prepared.

Once she obtains her bachelor's degree in December 2015 from UH, Ashlee plans to apply to the nursing program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston or the University of Texas Medical Branch. To attain these goals, she is currently studying for the HESI (Health Education Systems, Inc.) and TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) exams so she can apply to nursing school this year. Passing these skills exams will be the first step toward her nursing career goals, and she is determined to pass both tests. When she completes the next level of training, Ashlee has set a goal to begin her nursing career at the medical center.

She has always been interested in the medical field and wants to make a difference in the world. Ashlee explained that as a nurse, “You will see the value of life when you see people fighting to stay alive.” She hopes to make a significant impact on health care through her initiative and compassion.

Although Ashlee is busy with graduation approaching in the fall, studying for finals, and preparing for admissions assessment exams, she still manages to carve out time for family and a social life. She values time spent with her family and friends and shows her Cougar pride by attending all UH home football games. Ashlee encourages students attending college in the fall to study consistently, stay on top of their assignments, and avoid procrastination!

GPISD is very proud to call Ashlee a member of our family! We wish her the best of luck as she continues to reach her goals. We know she will continue to make a positive impact on many lives through her compassion!
