Cathy Hernandez

Meet Cathy Hernandez, a 2005 Galena Park High School graduate. During her high school years, she accomplished more than the average student and was involved in numerous organizations, all of which contributed to her becoming an outstanding student and scholar. Cathy graduated Magna Cum Laude (the top 5% of her high school class), she was a member of the National Honor Society, the Principal and Superintendent’s Advisory Board, Senior Class Representative, and a member of LULAC, the school’s choir, the girls’ basketball team, and the Jacketeers.
After high school, Cathy attended the University of Houston's Central campus and earned her bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism. She chose this major because of her love for writing and public speaking. Her goal was to pursue a career as a reporter. She also wanted to help the community and knew that, as a reporter, she would have the opportunity to incorporate writing and public speaking while still assisting the community. While attending U of H, Cathy was a part of the Cougar Dolls Dance Team, where she entertained, energized, and inspired audiences at designated University of Houston Athletic contests and promotional events. During her last semester of college, she interned for KPRC, where she worked the overnight shift (midnight to 7 in the morning), prepping for the morning show.
After she obtained her degree, Cathy continued working at KPRC as an Associate Producer. She was then promoted to Producer and Writer, where her duties included organizing newscasts, developing stories, and arranging them in order. During her three years at KPRC, Cathy worked in one of the top 10 newsrooms in the market and took advantage of behind-the-scenes access. Cathy was also an NFL Cheerleader for the Houston Texans. Before she joined FOX 31 Denver in April 2014, she worked as a reporter, anchor, and producer in El Paso. She left El Paso because she was ready to move to a bigger city and with a bigger challenge. During her time in Denver, she had the opportunity to learn about the city's new cultures and meet new people. This experience has broadened her horizons and enriched her life by introducing her to different cultures and giving her new perspectives on the world. Cathy recently returned to Houston to work as a reporter at KPRC.
Although Cathy is always busy and devoted to her career, her hobbies include spending time with family and friends, meeting new people, working out, enjoying the outdoors, and getting involved in the community. She loves her job because she can tell a new story every day, meet new people, and make a difference and spur change. Her future goals are to continue working to make a difference in the community.
Cathy believes that if you work hard and dedicate yourself, you can achieve anything. To chase and achieve your dreams, you must make sacrifices that won’t be easy but will be worth it. She also explained that the hardest experience is also the most rewarding. You learn a lot about yourself and what you want out of life.
We are so proud of Cathy’s accomplishments, and we know she will continue to be successful in her future endeavors! Welcome back to Houston, and we look forward to seeing you report the daily news! #GPISDProud
