Derrick Jackson

A smiling young man wearing glasses and a gray suit stands against a dark background.

Throughout his years in Galena Park ISD (GPISD), Derrick Jackson was guided by teachers who nurtured his curiosity and confidence. From the 21st Century Program at Woodland Acres Elementary School to memorable field trips with Mrs. Williams, Ms. Jones (then Mrs. Tubbs), Mr. Slife, and Ms. Bohannon, he gained experiences that broadened his understanding of the world.

A defining moment came in second grade when Ms. Alms read Harry Potter aloud, sparking a lifelong love for the series. His bilingual development was strengthened by dedicated dual‑language teachers, including Ms. Michele, Ms. Delgado, Ms. Fuentes, Ms. Guerrero, Ms. V, and Ms. Ibarra. Derrick credits their support as a key part of his growth as a student and a leader.

To Derrick, GPISD was more than a school system—it was a place where he felt safe to learn, explore, and take on new challenges. He benefited from consistency, encouragement, and teachers who believed in his potential. “My teachers stewarded an environment that allowed me to grow and learn,” he reflects, noting how this foundation carried him into later success.

Derrick credits GPISD and CTE Early College High School with preparing him well for life beyond high school. “College was challenging, but school was never the challenge,” he says. One of his favorite memories is hearing the North Shore Band practice from his backyard, a daily reminder of the community pride that stayed with him long after graduation.

After high school, Derrick earned a full‑ride U.S. Marine Corps NROTC scholarship and later another full‑ride scholarship to Huston‑Tillotson University, where he completed his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting with honors. His career includes work in private equity, contributions to a 2024 lunar mission, and leadership as founder of Ten X Studio and The BASIC Foundation. Grateful for GPISD’s recognition, he shares, “There is still so much more of my story left to be written.”

GPISD is proud to honor  Derrick Jackson as a Black History Month spotlight and celebrate his accomplishments and leadership in our community.
