Vanessa and Alondra Barquera

Twin sisters Vanessa and Alondra Barquera were born and raised on the east side of Houston, Texas, where the values of hard work, family, and community shaped their upbringing. Growing up in Galena Park ISD, their story began at Pyburn Elementary, where teachers often struggled to tell them apart. Despite their similarities, it was clear they were each one of a kind—though their goals were always aligned: to make something of themselves and never forget where they came from. Their academic journey continued at Woodland Acres Middle School before they embraced the challenge of enrolling in the newly established CTE Early College High School. There, they thrived. Vanessa and Alondra graduated with honors, ranked salutatorian and third in the class, respectively, and both received an associate’s degree.

In 2019, for the first time in their lives, their paths diverged. Vanessa was accepted to the University of North Carolina, while Alondra chose the University of Texas at Austin, drawn to the city's vibrancy and burnt orange spirit. Four years later, in May 2023, both graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Today, Vanessa works as a registered nurse in the emergency department of a small city outside of Raleigh, North Carolina. She's deeply involved in hospital initiatives, serving on several committees, and holding a chair position. Alondra is a registered nurse in a pediatric hospital in Austin, Texas. She recently acquired a CPN certification from the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board, where she combines clinical expertise with compassionate care. As bilingual nurses, Vanessa and Alondra connect with patients not only through skill but also through language, culture, and empathy. As the Barquera sisters proudly say, “Speaking Spanish is our superpower.”
