About the McKinney-Vento Act

Serves children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate night time residence.

  • Sharing the housing of others due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or similar reason.
  • Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to lack of alternative adequate accommodations.
  • Living in emergency or transitional shelters.
  • Living in a public or private place not designed for or regularly used as accommodations.
  • Living in cars, parks, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings.

Children may also:

  • Continue to attend the school in which they were last enrolled, even if they have moved away from the school's attendance zone or district.
  • Receive transportation from your current residence back to their school of origin.
  • Participate fully in all school activities and programs for which they are eligible.
  • Enroll in a new school without typically required records such as proof of residency, immunizations, school records, or other documents.
  • Contact the district liaison to resolve any disputes that arise during the enrollment process.
