Dyslexia
Welcome — Galena Park ISD Dyslexia Support for Parents
Welcome to Galena Park ISD’s dyslexia information page. We know questions and concerns can be overwhelming when your child is learning differently. This page gives clear, practical information about dyslexia, how GPISD identifies and supports students, and where families can find resources and help. Galena Park ISD's mission is to provide research-based instruction and interventions to support students with dyslexia in developing the skills necessary to become successful readers and lifelong learners.
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a specific learning difference that primarily affects reading, spelling, and writing. It is not related to intelligence or effort — many students with dyslexia are bright and creative but need explicit, structured instruction to learn reading skills. Early identification and targeted interventions make a big difference in a child’s progress.
Characteristics and Consequences of Dyslexia
Common characteristics may include:
- Difficulty learning to decode words and recognize sight words
- Slow, effortful reading and frequent guessing
- Trouble with spelling and letter/sound correspondence
- Difficulty remembering sequences (e.g., days of the week) and following multi-step directions
If not supported, dyslexia can lead to:
- Reduced reading fluency and comprehension
- Lower self-confidence and increased frustration
- Gaps in content-area learning as grade-level texts become more complex
Dyslexia Evaluation and Identification
GPISD follows a systematic process to identify students who may have dyslexia. This typically includes:
- Teacher observations and classroom screening
- Targeted reading assessments administered by trained staff
- A comprehensive evaluation of phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, and reading comprehension. When criteria are met, students are identified, and an individualized plan is created that details instruction and accommodations.
If you have concerns about your child’s reading, contact your child’s teacher or the campus dyslexia specialist to discuss screening and next steps. We’re here to partner with you so every student can reach their full potential.
