Galena Park High School Volleyball

  • Pasadena
The Galena Park Lady Jackets traveled to the Pasadena Eagles this Friday night for some more pre-district volleyball.  Even though the sub-varsity teams suffered losses the varsity team capped the night off with a knock-down-drag-out five set win.

    Freshman Team:
After a win on Tuesday night this week the freshman team suffered a two set defeat (22-25 and 13-25).  The match had moments of solid volleyball, especially from defenders Jackie Galvan and Genesis Heineman, but the team still made youthful errors.  Coach Baggett doled out kudos to Jackie for her stellar defensive play throughout the match.

    Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team continues to play solid volleyball despite losing to Pasadena, 17-25, 25-11, 20-25.  The match was full of long rallies, great hustle plays, big hits and solid serving.  The team was anchored by sophomore; Monse Villalobos whose experience provides a foundation for the team’s successes.  Monse led the team with 7 kills.  The entire team contributed Friday night and Coach Swanson is looking forward to watching this young team continue to develop.

    Varsity Team:
The varsity team has had a plethora of matches in the last 10 days and Friday night was their 16th match of that time frame.  Match 16 proved to be a lucky match as GP lost 22-25 and 14-25 before rallying 25-15, 25-23, and 15-12 for the five set win.  Sets one and two went to Pasadena as the Jacket defense struggled getting the offense started.  Coach Kellner made a strategic hitting substitution putting freshman Jazlynn Estrada on the outside hitter spot and her energy seemed to turn the tide.  The Yellowjackets controlled the third set from the first served, battled through the fourth and despite an early deficit in the fifth managed to rally and put an end to the Eagles hopes for a win.  Zoie Garcia and Julie Rojas led the team with 9 kills and Zoie was the player of the game as her leadership and poise kept her team focused!

    On Deck:
The varsity will be back in action at the Spring ISD tournament August 17th.  Then the entire program will travel to Marshall High School on Tuesday, August 20th.  The freshman will take the floor first at 4:30 pm followed by the JV then the varsity matches.

    Heights
The Lady Jacket Volleyball program hosted Heights High School on Tuesday, August 13th for some more pre-district volleyball action.

    Freshman Team:
The youngest members of the swarm took control early and stung the Bulldogs, winning in two sets (25-12 and 25-16).  Daisia Cearcy was the player of the game with her aggressive play for a full six rotations.

    Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team followed suit, defeating Heights in two straight sets as well.  The entire team played well and everyone contributed to the team win.  The first set was 25-11 GP and the second 25-13.

    Varsity Team:
The varsity team continued to struggle with inconsistency but had several stellar moments throughout the five set loss to the Bulldogs Tuesday night.  The Yellowjackets played hard but suffered from lapses of focus during the first two sets.  The first set was 19-25 Heights and the second was 25-27 Heights.  The momentum swung in the Jackets’ favor in sets three and four as the ladies found a rhythm winning 25-20 and 25-18.  With the momentum and some much needed confidence, the Lady Jackets scored the first points of set five and seemed to be on the road to a set win and a match victory.  Then the doubts and nerves rolled in like a summer squall, tossing the Lady Jackets overboard without a lifeboat.  Heights managed to drowned the hopes of GP with a set five 10-15 win.  Alexa Quiroga led the Lady Jackets with 11 kills and Haven Hernandez earned MVP honors with her aggressive net play, hustle and timely digs!
