  • GPHS vs Santa Fe
    Freshman Gold Team:
    The Gold team didn’t play.

    Freshman Black Team:
The Black team played in a back and forth contest as each team battled for every point.  The Indians took an early 9-10 lead and held the lead through the second and third quarters.  However, the Yellowjackets proved a difficult foe to shake as the young ballers slowly chipped away at the Indians lead.  Finally, in the fourth the Jackets managed to put up a 13 point quarter while holding the Indians to only 5 points resulting in the 44-40 Jacket victory.  Amarion Kelly led the team with 14 points and Bernardo Vazquez banged in 11 from the paint.

    Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team found themselves having to make up ground as they fell behind by a score of 27-31 in the first half against the Indians.  Spurred by the rebounding and hustle play of Rene Rullier (8 rebounds and 4 steals) the Jackets managed to pull out a 20 point third quarter while holding the Indians to only 5 points in the third.  The fourth quarter was more of the same as G.P. added another 17 points while holding Santa Fe to only 10 points.  At the end of four quarters, Galena Park dominated Santa Fe with a 64-46 win.  Galena Park was led by the scoring of Derrick Sampson who had 18 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals.  Paul Zermeno scored another 15 points, added 6 more rebounds, a steal and 4 assists to the evening’s stats.  Kailen Colums scored 10 points, had 4 blocked shots, 7 rebounds (4 of those on the offensive boards), 2 assists, and 2 steals.  Alfonse Trahan worked his magic at the point leading the team with 7 assists!

    Varsity Team:
Coach Woodall and the Galena Park basketball program recognized the time and dedication of 13 seniors before the beginning of the evening’s game.  Those seniors included trainer, Adriana Lopez; managers: Jacqueline Landaverde, Nathaniel Zamora, and Andres Fernandez; Danilo DaCosta, Irvin Fuentes, Robert Moya, Jesse Perez, Miguel Umana, Daniel De Santiago, Deiondre Fonseca, Isaiah Sanchez, and Julian Macias.  Once the love and recognition had been paid it was time to “play ball” and G.P. found themselves in a four quarter battle!  The Yellowjackets defeated Santa Fe 50-39 after a game filled with intensity and a smidge of attitude.    The game remained tight through the first three quarters with neither team really able to pull away.  G.P. had a teensy, 2-point lead entering the fourth quarter that blew into an 11 point win after Julian Macias hit several technical foul shots.  Julian Macias led G.P. scorers with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals.  John Victoria played a solid game keeping himself out of foul trouble and on the floor which led to 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and a blocked shot for John.  Deiondre Fonseca took 3 charges during the game and really should have had a fourth (aye, officials); these don’t show up on a scoreboard but they are always momentum changing plays!
