GIFTED PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Galena Park Independent School District identifies and serves gifted and talented students who excel consistently or who show the potential to excel in the areas of general intellectual ability and creative and productive thinking.
The district serves students in grades kindergarten through twelve. Every effort is made to place students in the most appropriate educational setting.
Journeys is a talent pool of identified students in kindergarten through fifth grade. It is an enrichment program designed to serve the top four to seven percent of the student population at each grade level at each campus.
Beginning in the fourth grade, students are eligible to participate in the Encounters program which consists of the district’s top three to five percent. This provision is maintained through grade nine.
Students in the fourth and fifth grade Encounters program participate in pull-out services one day a week at a designated school.
The top three to five percent of the district’s students in grades seven through nine participate in the Encounters program on their home campus.
Students in grades six through twelve also participate in the Pre-Advanced Placement and Advanced Placement Program through classes offered in specific academic areas. Students also participate in other options at the high school level (concurrent enrollment and/or independent study) appropriate to their educational endeavors.
- The Texas Association for the Gifted & Talented (TAGT) is an organization of educators and parents dedicated to meeting the unique needs of gifted and talented students. Chartered in 1978, TAGT is the nation’s largest state advocacy group of its kind, providing nearly 3,000 members and friends of gifted youth a forum for exchanging ideas and information about the education of gifted and talented students. TAGT recognizes the unique social, emotional, and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students and provides educational services to meet these needs.
- National Association for Gifted Children - Supporting The Needs Of High-Potential Learners - An estimated 3,000,000 gifted children sit in classrooms across the U.S. today. Because learning styles and levels vary widely, the needs of "smart kids" are far too often overlooked in the logical quest to meet minimum standards.
- College Board - Each year, the College Board helps more than seven million students prepare for a successful transition to college through programs and services in college readiness and college success — including the SAT and the Advanced Placement Program. The organization also serves the education community through research and advocacy on behalf of students, educators, and schools.
