At the December 9^th Board of Trustees Meeting, Galena Park ISD recognized Galena Park High School FFA students Jenevieve Gomez and Marjorie Reyes for advancing to sale at the State Fair of Texas.

On September 28, 2024, in the Market Lamb Show, Jenevieve Gomez placed eighth, and Marjorie Reyes placed ninth in their classes. Each earned an impressive $1,200 in scholarship money for future education or animal projects. Galena Park ISD is proud of these achievements and for providing the opportunity for all students to excel in their chosen fields of study.

At the December 9^th Board of Trustees meeting, Sam Harris, Director of Fine Arts, was recognized for recently being named a member of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston’s Learning and Interpretation Committee (former Education Board). Previously, only Houston ISD was represented on the board. Mr. Harris’s membership on this committee further deepens the more than two decades of partnership between GPISD and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, which he initiated when he became GPISD’s Director of Fine Arts in 2000. Galena Park ISD is proud to be a part of the opportunity to connect education with the museum community.

December 4, 2024, marked a momentous occasion for nine of North Shore Senior High School’s senior athletes. These celebrated Mustangs football players participated in NCAA’s National Letter of Intent Football Early Signing Day. Signing letters of intent marked a significant milestone in the young athletes’ careers as they took the first steps toward fulfilling their dreams of playing college football.

Each of the nine plays, who had contributed to the Mustangs’ winning legacy, took turns at the signing table, accompanied by their proud coaches and family members. The ceremony was a testament to their hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport. Here’s a glimpse into the future collegiate homes of the talented athletes:

As these nine standouts move on to the next level, they carry the support and best wishes of the GPISD school community!

Galena Park ISD is home to five of the 541 Texas public schools awarded the Purple Star Campus designation for the 2024 - 2025 and the 2025 - 2026 school years. Established in 2019 by Texas Governor Greg Abbott (Senate Bill 1557), campuses are recognized because of their unwavering dedication and support of military-connected students and their families. North Shore Elementary School, Cunningham Middle School, Galena Park Middle School, North Shore Middle School, and North Shore High School met rigorous criteria, including establishing a campus-based military liaison, creating a dedicated webpage with resources for military-connected families, instituting a campus transition program for military-connected students, and supporting a military family assistance initiative. These campuses will also receive a special Purple Star recognition to display on their campus or their websites.

The spirit of giving continues as Galena Park ISD (GPISD) partnered with the East Harris County Empowerment Council (EHCEC) for the annual Hope for the Holidays event to ensure families in the District enjoy a bountiful holiday feast. This year, the EHCEC generously donated 120 turkeys to the families while the GPISD administrative team completed the feast with all the necessary fixings. GPISD School Counselors are an integral part of Hope for the Holidays. They register families, decorate boxes containing the fixings, gather to pick up the meals, and diligently deliver meals to their respective families. The School Counselors’ personal touch makes each meal special, reinforcing the community’s commitment to caring for one another. As the Superintendent of Schools stated, “Hope for the Holidays has become a cherished tradition in Galena Park ISD, touching the lives of many and exemplifying the power of partnership and the impact of small acts of kindness. We are proud to give, share, and embrace the holiday season as a community.”

Galena Park ISD’s Dayne Robins has been named Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Community Leader! Now in its second year, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Community Coffee celebrates educators and school administrators who impact student-athletes' lives–on the field and in the classroom. Mr. Robins, North Shore Senior High School’s (NSSHS) Deputy Principal, is one of ten leaders throughout the state who will be recognized this school year. With the honor of being recognized, Robins will receive a commemorative football and gift package and a $500 donation to NSSHS.

NSSHS’s Head Football Coach, Willie Gaston, noted, “Mr. Robins has a special attitude; he greets all faculty, staff, and students every morning with a smile. His energy is contagious to the point you feel challenged to match it. He prioritizes the students and their safety, but his energy makes him a true community leader.” Dane Robins is not only a recipient of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Community Leader Award, but he is forever a member of the GPISD community.

On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, the sun was a bit brighter at Shirley J. Williamson Elementary School as Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees; Superintendent of Schools, Dr. John Moore; Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, Dr. Mechelle Epps; Shirley J. Williamson Elementary School Principal, Kimberly Wells; and members of the North Channel Area Chamber of Commerce gathered for the Ribbon Cutting and Dedication Ceremony of the Galena Park ISD Adaptive Playground. GPISD is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where all children can thrive. To that end, the playground is a place of joy and accessibility for all children, regardless of their abilities. By redefining the role of play in education and creating a space where children can learn through exploration and interaction, a love of learning can extend beyond the classroom. GPISD’s Superintendent of Schools stated, “We hope this playground will enhance a love for learning through play for every child who enters these gates.”

At the October 7^th Board of Trustees Meeting, Galena Park ISD (GPISD) recognized Woodland Acres Elementary School, Galena Park Middle School, North Shore Middle School, and CTE Early College High School for earning an ‘A’ rating for the 2023-2024 school year from the Texas Education Agency (TEA). While official ratings have not been received from TEA due to ongoing litigation, GPISD’s calculations, verified utilizing TEA’s Data Match Opportunity, indicate these campuses received an ‘A’ rating.

Receiving an ‘A’ rating reflects outstanding academic performance, excellent student progress, and high reading levels for post-secondary success. The TEA’s rigorous evaluation criteria ensure these campuses have demonstrated exceptional dedication to fostering a positive and effective learning environment. This achievement reflects the collective efforts of the entire GPISD community.

Galena Park ISD (GPISD) recognized the Student Nutrition Department at the October 7^th Board of Trustees Meeting. The Student Nutrition Department earned a Healthy Meals Incentive Recognition Award from the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service and Action for Healthy Kids. The Healthy Meals Initiative celebrates school food authorities that have improved their school meals. The Student Nutrition Department worked together to educate GPISD families about sodium, added sugars, and whole grain content of school meals. The GPISD Board of Trustees thanks the team for consistently providing students with the education and nourishment they need to learn, grow, and play.

An outstanding 670 students from 4^th to 8^th grade participated in this summer’s Education in Action 2024 Lone Star Leadership Academy camps–and one of those students proudly represented Galena Park ISD! Havard Elementary School’s Juliet Butler attended the Dallas/Fort Worth Lone Star Leadership Academy camp. The Lone Star Leadership Academy experience provided a unique opportunity for Juliet to learn about Texas leaders and what it means to be from the Lone Star State. She completed problem-solving and decision-making simulations, exercised creativity, and practiced presentation skills in leadership groups. In addition, Juliet visited the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District Perot Museum, and the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. She also had fun meeting other outstanding students while adding academic achievements to her resume, developing leadership skills, and bringing home a wealth of information to supplement her learning in school.

Galena Park ISD is proud of Juliet Butler for her outstanding leadership at Harvard Elementary School and the Lone Star Leadership Academy. At the September 9, 2024, Galena Park ISD (GPISD) Board of Trustees meeting, GPISD recognized Lorena Sandoval for being selected as the District 4 recipient of the 2024 State Board of Education (SBOE) Heroes for Children award. Ms. Sandoval is one of only 15 awardees statewide to receive this recognition for the outstanding volunteerism she has offered to Galena Park ISD. She assisted North Shore Elementary School host their Fall Festival, Fathers Take Your Child to School Day, Grandparents Day Breakfast, Pancakes for Parents, Red Ribbon Week, and the Sam Houston Boat Tour. Thank you, Ms. Sandoval, for being a volunteer leader and student advocate throughout the 2023-2024 school year.

At the June 10th Board of Trustees meeting, the Board elected new officers for the 2024-2025 school year and recognized them in their new roles. Norma Hernandez, who previously served as the Board’s Vice president, was elected President. Ramon Garza was elected Vice President, and Linda Clark Sherrard was chosen Secretary for the upcoming school year.

The Superintendent and the Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees function as a “Team of Eight.” The Board is responsible for creating policy for the District, adopting the budget, and setting goals and priorities. It is the responsibility of the superintendent and staff to lead the District and ensure the board-adopted policies are implemented.

Jacolby Johnson, Cobb Sixth Grade Campus student, embarked on a life-changing journey this summer that extended his heart and hands to an international community. Jacolby joined a medical outreach mission to Guyana to make a tangible difference in the lives of people far beyond his hometown. As a member of the Specialist Medical Outreach Team with Youth on a Mission Church of God, Ja’Colby helped to provide medical assistance to over 200 residents of Guyana. The team checked blood pressure, completed dental extractions, and distributed eyeglasses. Jacolby witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by communities with limited access to healthcare and the impact that even small acts of kindness can have. Jacolby returned home with a renewed sense of purpose and a broader perspective on the world. His journey to Guyana provided immediate aid to those in need and planted the seeds for a lifelong commitment to service. Jacolby’s story is a testament to the power of empathy and action, proving that no matter how young, anyone can make a significant difference in the world.

Nate Griffin, Sports Analyist for KRIV-TV and Fox 26 Morning News; Allan Jamail, freelance writer and contributor to North Channel Star; Randy McIlvoy, Emmy Award-Winning Sports Anchor and Reporter with KPRC's Click 2 Houston; Bob Slovak, with ABC 13's Eyewitness News Sports Team; and David Taylor, also with North Channel Star were named to the Texas Association of School Boards’ (TASB’s) 2024 Media Honor Roll by Galena Park ISD. The Media Honor Roll recognizes media representatives statewide for fair and balanced reporting of news about public schools. Media from newspapers, radio and television stations, and digital publications across the state were honored. These media representatives’ efforts to get to know the superintendent, board president, and the District’s mission and goals; report school news in a fair, accurate, and balanced manner; give a high profile to positive news about schools; visit the schools; and maintain a policy of no surprises by sharing information with school officials remain an integral part of Galena Park ISD’s educational community.

At Galena Park ISD’s (GPISD) June 10, 2024, Board of Trustees meeting, State Board of Education (SBOE) Member Staci Childs joined the GPISD Trustees in congratulating Johnny Dixon III for receiving the 2024 Student Heroes Award for SBOE District 4. The Student Heroes program recognizes Texas public school students who do an outstanding volunteer service that benefits their fellow students, schools, or communities. To be nominated for this award, the volunteer service project performed by the student cannot be associated with any curriculum requirement, school service project, or community program. Because the GPISD community has benefited from several of his projects that have strengthened us, Johnny is one of only fifteen students to be recognized this year. Johnny is an outstanding representative for SBOE’s District 4 and especially GPISD!

Galena Park ISD recognized Galena Park High School Future Farmers of America senior, Alyssa Silva for being the first ever to advance to sale at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Market Lamb Show in March. The Houston Livestock Show is the largest in the United States, with only 26% of all entries advancing to sale or auction. Thousands of participants from around the nation attend the Houston Rodeo hoping to advance to sale at the auction. Alyssa placed 12^th out of 96 lambs in her class. Congratulations to Alyssa! A certificate and medal were presented to Alyssa Silva on behalf of the Board of Trustees and Dr. John Moore, Superintendent of Schools.

Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees recognized the Business Operations, Energy Management, and Purchasing Departments for earning a rebate from the Texas Association of School Board (TASB) Energy Cooperative. The TASB Energy Cooperative was created in 2008 to help governmental entities with the procurement of electricity, transportation fuels, and other types of energy products, commodities, and services. The Energy Cooperative helps school districts, colleges, universities, and governmental entities across Texas increase purchasing power and create budget certainty. The member-governed organization created operational efficiency goals over the past several years, and as a result, efficiencies resulted in excess revenue that came right back to Galena Park ISD in the form of a one-time disbursement. Adrian Porras and Rich Vela, with the TASB Energy Cooperative, presented a commemorative reimbursement to the Business Operations, Energy Management, and Purchasing Department team members, and a certificate of appreciation was presented to each team member on behalf of the Board of Trustees and Dr. John Moore, Superintendent of Schools.

The Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees celebrated the recent distinction of Galena Park ISD receiving the 2024 H-E-B Excellence in Education Large School District Award. The District's commitment to student achievement through innovative programs, parent and community involvement, and professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators is unmatched. This award honors outstanding public school professionals and thanks them for their dedication and commitment. Galena Park ISD recognized Roxanne McCabe, Sam Houston Elementary School Counselor, for receiving the 2024 H-E-B Excellence in Education Award in the School Counselor Elementary category. The H-E-B Excellence in Education Award for School Counselors recognizes School Counselors for providing a safe, supportive, and caring environment for all students, using the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling programs. It also applauds School Counselors for coordinating counseling services to assist students with problems and concerns. School Counselors who exhibit professionalism and school counseling leadership that positively impact student outcomes are celebrated as well. Galena Park ISD recognized the North Shore Rotary Club for its generous donation to the Fifth Annual Mental Health Awareness Fair. The fair, inspired by a former Galena Park ISD student who lost her father to suicide, aims to destigmatize mental health disorders. On May 7^th, the fair offered hands-on activities, fun games, and opportunities to meet with community partners, all to educate the Galena Park community about the prevalence of and support for mental health disorders. Thank you to the North Shore Rotary Club for your assistance in bringing a needed resource to our community!

Galena Park ISD (GPISD) has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. The NAMM Foundation is a nonprofit supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and its 15,000 global member companies and individual professionals worldwide. The foundation advances active participation in music-making by supporting scientific research, philanthropic giving, and public service programs. Now in its 25th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in providing music access and education to all students.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, GPISD music teachers answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. GPISD stands out for music education due to its commitment to comprehensive programs, experienced and caring educators, diverse musical offerings, and community support. Its emphasis on nurturing creativity, inclusivity, and academic achievement makes it uniquely qualified for recognition as a best community for music education.

Galena Park ISD recognized the 6A Calculator Applications Team from North Shore Senior High School for winning first place in their division and earning additional individual awards at the 2024 Texas Math and Science Coaches Association (TMSCA) High School State Meeting on March 23^rd.

The conclusion of Spring Signing Day for high school athletes in Galena Park ISD was a pivotal moment that marked the transition from amateur sports to the collegiate level. It was a day filled with excitement and anticipation as students made formal commitments to their chosen colleges, celebrated with ceremonies adorned with school colors, and rooms filled with cheering friends, family, and coaches. For these young athletes, “signing” is not just about securing a spot on a college team; it's also about realizing long-held dreams and setting the stage for future successes on and off the field. The commitment they display reflects years of hard work and dedication, symbolizing both an end and a new beginning in their athletic and academic careers.

Galena Park ISD recognized the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board for their leadership and dedicated service to their schools and community. Students selected to serve on the advisory board meet with Dr. Moore and other district leaders throughout the year to provide feedback related to important student, school, and community concerns. Superintendent Student Advisory Board members are respected campus, community, and peer leaders with valuable perspectives who serve as campus ambassadors for Galena Park ISD. They provide suggestions for continuous improvement of the services and programs the district offers to students, are required to participate in one community service project each year, and participate in a yearlong book study that supports their postsecondary readiness.

This year’s service was concluded with an appreciation luncheon for the Student Advisory Board. Graduating seniors were celebrated and continuing advisory board members readied themselves for next year’s service project and student representation. The Student Advisory Board members received medals of service, certificates of appreciation, and spent a bit more time sharing concerns and suggestions with Dr. John Moore, Superintendent of Schools.

Galena Park ISD’s Board of Trustees recognized the Communications Department members who competed in the Texas School Public Relations Association (TSPRA) 2024 Star Awards Contest. Winners included: Coordinator Multimedia, Chris Gause; Executive Director, Sherrhonda Hunter; Coordinator for Audiovisual, Edwin Rose; and Coordinator for School-Community Relations and Marketing, Dr. Tommie Smith. TSPRA’s Star Awards is a top-level honor and provides recognition for the outstanding education communications and projects of its members. Independent, impartial judges evaluate each work and project based on set criteria. The department submitted five entries, and all five entries were named winners. Galena Park ISD is proud to be home to a winning Communications Department that works tirelessly to show that Galena Park ISD is a Great Place to Be!

At the April 9, 2024, Galena Park ISD (GPISD) Board of Trustees Meeting, a plaque was presented to Rice University’s Fun With Chemistry chapter and Dr. Kasey Leigh Yearty, Madeline Belknap, Alina Chow, Gabriel Seanz, and Maria Telesforo’s annual “Fun With Chemistry” demonstration at the North Shore Senior High 10^th Center (NS10). 

Fun with Chemistry is a Rice University outreach organization dedicated to inspiring and motivating K-12 students to develop an interest in and pursue careers in science. The program originated at the University of Texas and expanded to Rice University, which is now organized by Dr. Kasey Leigh Yearty and a Student Leadership Team. Since 2017, student volunteer teams have traveled to schools in the greater Houston area and have initiated community outreach by performing exciting demonstrations. The mission of the organization is to get often underserved students excited about science by presenting science to them in fun and creative ways. 

Since the Spring of 2022, the Science Department at NS10  has had the invaluable opportunity of hosting the “Fun With Chemistry '' demonstrations on its campus and inviting neighboring schools to benefit from the demonstrations.  As NS10 and Rice University have worked to make this an annual event,  Dr. Yearty and her team have not only fascinated students of GPISD with their unique demonstrations and experiments but have also acted as a catalyst to inspire students to explore future opportunities in STEM.

Galena Park ISD recognized the 2024 District Spelling Bee, Spanish Spelling Bee, and Invitational Spanish Spelling Bee winners. These students conquered word lists that featured academic content words. After several rounds of spelling challenges, they emerged victorious. These challenging competitions promote literacy, provide a performance to display students' hard work, and develop communication and speaking skills.

The Galena Park ISD (GPISD) Student Nutrition Department recently earned the Gold Turnip the Beet Award for its outstanding Summer Meal Program.

The Turnip the Beet Award recognized an elite group of 141 nationwide Summer Meal Program sponsors across the nation who offer high-quality, appetizing, appealing, and nutritious meals to children during the summer months. To earn this recognition, a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains were also served to GPISD students. High-quality summer meals provide daily energy and help ensure children are healthy and ready to learn all year long!

This is the second year in a row that the GPISD Student Nutrition has earned a Turnip the Beet Award.

For more than 50 years, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) School Art Program has challenged students and schools to think outside the box. Pieces of art were judged by the HLSR School Art Committee adjudicators at the NRG Center on Friday, January 19^th. The program provides students, Pre-K through 12^th grade, the opportunity to compete in district shows, earn scholarships, travel to summer workshops, and display artwork in the Hayloft Gallery during the rodeo. Currently, the School Art Program supports approximately 130 school districts in the Houston area. Each year, the Rodeo receives thousands of entries from talented young Texans. 

This year, Galena Park ISD (GPISD) is proud to be home to the Elementary Best of Show Winner, from Havard Elementary School, Aracelly Gonzalez; the Middle School Best of Show Winner, from Woodland Acres Middle School, Juan Romo; and the High School Best of Show Winner, from Galena Park High School, David Morales. David Morales's piece, titled Texas Long-Stare, garnered $25,000 at auction. This is the first GPISD student to have a piece of art auctioned in at least 17 years.

Local law enforcement and Galena Park ISD joined forces to create a unique opportunity for students to interact with service professionals. The event, hosted by Galena Park ISD's CTE Department at the Agriculture Facility on Friday, April 4, 2024, aimed to promote positive connections between students and service professionals. Precinct 1 Deputy Clint Brown was instrumental in coordinating the event, which attracted approximately 700 elementary students.

The event featured a range of booths and activities, including the Galena Park Public Library, Texas EquuSearch, a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter, Texas State Troopers, Coast Guard, Fire Departments, Deputies, and other service professional teams from surrounding areas. Students were invited to engage with the service professionals and learn more about the important work they do. One highlight of the event was the opportunity for students to step into the shoes of service professionals for a day. Students were named firefighters, FBI Agents, DEA officers, Coast Guard, and Deputies for a day, giving them a taste of what it's like to work in these fields. The students had a great time, and the event provided an opportunity for them to "Make the Connection" with service professionals.

Overall, the event was a resounding success, with students gaining valuable insights into the work of service professionals and building positive connections with these individuals. The collaboration between local law enforcement, community-based organizations, and Galena Park ISD highlights the importance of community partnerships in promoting positive outcomes for our students.

Thursday, March 21, 2024, marked the cornerstone leveling of Galena Park ISD’s W. F. Pyburn Elementary School. The grand reopening and dedication of the newly rebuilt Pyburn Elementary School was a momentous occasion filled with joy and anticipation. As the ribbon was cut and the doors opened to the public, there was a sense of pride and excitement in the air. The school, which has undergone extensive renovations and reconstruction since its original 1951 construction, is now a shining beacon of modern education in the community. The newly renovated facilities, including state-of-the-art classrooms, a modern library, and upgraded technology, promised to provide students with an enriched learning environment for years to come. The new Pyburn is just one result of the band 2016 referendum supported by the Galena Park community and the Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees. Trustee President Noe Esparaza stated best, “This celebration is not for a building but for the opportunities this building provides for our students to excel.”

Galena Park ISD thanked the Galena Park ISD Education Foundation team and Board of Directors for partnering with the Galena Park ISD’s Mental Health Intervention and Social Services Team to host the annual Mental Health Awareness Fair. The goal of the Mental Health Awareness Fair is to educate students, parents, and the community about mental health disorders, remove the stigma associated with mental health conditions, and provide access to mental health services for all community members. The time, effort, and commitment needed to support such goals will benefit all GPISD students. The Galena Park ISD Education Foundation’s donated resources were extremely valuable and informative.

The next annual Mental Health Awareness Fair is scheduled for May 7, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at North Shore Elementary School, 14310 Duncannon, Houston, TX 77015. All are welcome!

The Galena Park ISD Business Services Department recently earned the Association of School Business Officials International Meritorious Budget Award for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the Texas School of Business Officials Award of Merit for Purchasing Operations for the 2022-2023 fiscal year, the Certificate of Excellence in Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 2021-2022 fiscal year, and the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 2021-2022 fiscal year from the Government Finance Officers Association.

These distinctions are reflective of Galena Park ISD’s long-standing commitment to sound fiscal management, high standards for financial reporting and accountability, and consistent implementation of best practices in the area of purchasing operations.

Galena Park ISD’s second annual Super Star Buddy Relays once again brought special education athletes and non-disabled students together. With two newly added challenge zones and Athlete Cards that detail athlete likes and dislikes to be considered throughout additional playtime, this unique field event once again provided an opportunity for special education students to pair up, compete, and collaborate with their “buddies.” The Galena Park ISD Stadium was filled with encouragement and support while highlighting the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship.

As the day continued, it was clear that the Super Star Buddy Relays were not just about competition, but about building connections and breaking down barriers. Athletes had the chance to showcase their skills and talents alongside their peers, while their buddies gained a deeper understanding and appreciation for inclusivity and diversity. The smiles, dances, and laughter throughout the day were a testament to the power of inclusivity while celebrating the abilities and strengths of all GPISD students.

Galena Park ISD recognized Lee Sennet, School Counselor at North Shore Senior High Ninth Grade Center, for receiving the Texas Counseling Association Counselor of the Year 2024 Rhosine Fleming Award. The Rhosine Fleming Award is awarded each year to an outstanding school counselor at each level. The recipients are living memorials of Rhosine Fleming’s dedication, professional involvement, and growth in the world of school counseling. Such a distinction further highlights the excellence within GPISD’s educational team.

Kimberly Wells has served as the assistant principal of Williamson Elementary School for one year, and Keith Skiles has served as assistant principal of North Shore Middle School for seven years.

Galena Park ISD’s North Shore Senior High School Band is home to the most number of students to advance to the Texas Music Educators Association 6A All-State Band in one year since 1989:

This is the result of hard work, countless hours of practice, and dedication to musicianship. More than 50,000 band, choir, and orchestra students audition at the district level each fall, and only about 1500 are selected to perform. These students are truly the best of the best!

On February 8, 2024, Ms. LaTisha Guillory, an English Teacher at North Shore Senior High 10^th Grade Center, was named the 2023 Houston Area Alliance Black School Educator (HAABSE) Outstanding Secondary Teacher of the Year for the entire Houston area.

The purpose of the Outstanding Teacher Awards is to say “thank you” to teachers for the outstanding job they do in working with children. The HAABSE Retired Eduator’s Committee reviewed applications, determined and interviewed finalists, and then selected the Teacher of the Year recipients. The recipients are also eligible for monetary awards ranging up to $1,000. This year’s award theme was: “Celebrating Excellence,” and Galena Park ISD is proud to celebrate Ms. LaTisha Guillory’s commitment to excellence!

On Monday, February 12, 2024, the Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees recognized and presented certificates to the school counseling teams at Galena Park Middle School, North Shore Middle School, North Shore Senior High Ninth Grade Center, and Galena Park High School for earning Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas (CREST) Awards.

In 2005, the Texas School Counselor Association began a program called CREST to recognize schools with outstanding counseling programs. Schools receiving CREST awards have demonstrated a commitment using the Texas Model to improve the lives and achievement of students in academic, career, and personal social domains. CREST is a continuous improvement document that allows a school counseling program to demonstrate effective communication and a commitment to obtaining results. CREST helps counselors evaluate their counseling programs, promote their programs to the stakeholders in their districts, demonstrate the effectiveness of their guidance and counseling programs through empirical means, and implement the Texas and National models for school counseling programs.

CREST looks at the counseling program in five categories:

• Introduction to the School and the Role of the Professional School Counselor

• Program Implementation Cycle

• Foundational Components

• Four Service Delivery Components

• Program Curriculum

These counseling teams prepared a digital submission that highlighted these areas and communicated what the counseling programs are doing to help students succeed. These were sent to reviewers throughout the state of Texas to be judged according to pre-set standards of excellence.

The Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees joined The College Band Directors National Association, Music for All, and National Band Association in recognizing Shane Goforth, North Shore Senior High School Band Director, for receiving the Dr. William P. Foster Project Community Development Award.

The Foster Project Community Development Award recognizes select educators within quality programs who provide strong music education experiences for their students and positively impact their school and community. Mr. Goforth was one of seventy-five teachers nominated from around the country and was chosen as the honoree for the Northwest Division, which encompasses five states.

When Mr. Goforth traveled to Chicago to accept this prestigious award, he shared the two philosophies that are at the heart of every decision he makes as an educator. “The first is, ‘Band is family.’ The incredible human beings that walk into my band hall everyday are more than just music students, they are family. As family, we are bound together with a unity that withstands the storms of life and allows us to depend on and learn from each other through both triumphs and tragedies. The second is ‘Do great work!’ We define work as purpose driven activity, and believe that everything we do should have purpose. Through the unselfish pursuit of that work we create the trust and relationships necessary to nourish beautiful, vibrant, loving communities from the inside out. There is nothing more fulfilling than speaking into the lives of young people and watching them grow and flourish. The work is filled with unique challenges and is often difficult, but I cannot imagine a job that provides more joy and motivation than that of teaching music in a low socio­economic community. I believe that every child deserves a great musical education and I implore anyone with a heart for children and a love of music to make teaching music and building community through music their life's work.”

Toshia Gouard has served as the principal of Tice Elementary School for six years, and Dr. Kimberly Martin has served as the principal of Galena Park High School for six years.

The excitement in the air was palpable as four North Shore Senior High School Football Mustangs signed their letters of intent on National Signing Day, February 7, 2024. Players, coaches, and families gathered together to celebrate this momentous occasion. Through hard work, sacrifice, and commitment to their sport, these players have accomplished something special!

Before Wednesday, January 17, 2024, it had been a decade since the 5-A North Shore Senior High School Boys Basketball Championship Team had celebrated their victory with a record of 35-3. As the team gathered for their reunion, it was clear that time had passed, but their bond was as strong as ever. Players Jordan Banks, Michael Capers, Jalin Hart, and Brandon Etienne all walked in with smiles on their faces, excited to see each other. Their coach, David Green, had pushed them to be their best, instilling a sense of teamwork and a belief in their abilities. Assistant coaches during their winning season, Willie Gaston, Reggie Wallace, and Michael Williams, also took part in the celebration as they shared their pride about the profound impact the team made. As the champions reminisced, they recalled how they had put in countless hours of hard work and dedication to achieve their goal. Looking back, they all agreed that the unity of the team made them unstoppable.

At the January 9, 2024, Board of Trustees Meeting, Galena Park ISD thanked Chevron Corporation for their DonorsChoose grants to four Galena Park ISD (GPISD) schools. Chevron recognizes that supporting education–particularly in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is essential to prepare students of today for jobs of tomorrow. In partnership with DonorsChoose, Chevron provided grants to Galena Park Elementary School, MacArthur Elementary School, Galena Park Middle School, and Galena Park High School to increase educational opportunities. These funds will be used to support this GPISD community and to move closer to a nation where students in every community have the tools and experiences needed for a great education. A plaque was presented to Chevron Corporation and DonorsChoose on behalf of the Board of Trustees and Dr. John Moore, superintendent of schools.

Galena Park ISD recognized Geography Bee and Social Studies Bee winners. The Geography Bee elementary overall top scorer was Galena Park Elementary School’s Jared Resendez, and the middle school overall top scorer was North Shore Middle School’s Elias Nieto. The Geography Bee is an annual competition designed to encourage the study of geography, and students are selected by their campus to compete among their peers. During the competition, participants were asked geography questions and earned points for correct answers.

The Social Studies Bee and Ruby Gresham Scholarship winner was Hector Umana, from North Shore Senior High School. The Social Studies Bee is a competition that focuses on history across the United States. This annual competition emphasizes what students are learning in the classroom and extends their application of knowledge.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and Dr. John Moore, superintendent of schools, Resendez, Nieto, and Umana were present with a medal and certificate.

Sam Houston Elementary School’s 2023 Teacher of the Year, Ms. Vonthisha DeFriend, was also recently named the 2023 Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts (TCTELA). The TCTELA annual Teacher of the Year awards recognize outstanding elementary, middle school, high school, and college educators. Ms. DeFriend has taught kindergarten, first, and third grade in Galena Park ISD. She is currently a third-grade English as a Second Language Teacher at Sam Houston Elementary School, serving as the team lead. Not only was she Sam Houston Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year last year, but her team was also honored with the Team of the Year Award as she also earned the School Spirit Award. DeFriend’s accomplishments were recognized by Galena Park ISD’s Board of Trustees at their January 9, 2023, meeting. DeFriend’s clear commitment to our youngest learners rightfully makes her Teacher of the Year–yet again!

January is School Board Recognition Month, and Girl Scout Troop 132403’s Leader, Cory Ann Milner, escorted Brownie Lena Milner (3rd grader at Williamson Elementary School) to kick off the appreciation at Galena Park ISD’s Board of Trustees meeting on January 9, 2024. Galena Park ISD is celebrating its trustees for their dedication and commitment to the district and its students. The theme of this year’s School Board Recognition Month is Locally Elected, Community Connected, which highlights the connection between school trustees and their communities. In Texas, school board members are elected by community members who trust them to do what’s best for students. This connection ensures that board members are accountable to local voters, attuned to the needs of their communities, and dedicated to a brighter future. School board members are the largest group (more than 7,000) of locally elected officials in the state. Board members serving Galena Park ISD are President Noe Esparza; Vice President Norma Hernandez; Secretary Ramon Garza; Jose Jimenez, Trustee; Wanda Heath Johnson, Trustee; Linda Clark Sherrard, Trustee; Adrian Stephen, Trustee.

At the December 11^th Board of Trustees Meeting, Galena Park ISD (GPISD) recognized the Fellowship of Purpose World Changers Youth Ministry for partnering with the District to provide 50 families with Thanksgiving baskets. This selfless act of giving has shown the true spirit of generosity and will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the community. The District recognized and commended the church for its efforts in making a difference in the lives of GPISD families. We are thankful for this spirit of giving in our community.

A plaque was presented to the Fellowship of Purpose World Changers Youth Ministry (represented by Kim Lane and Daniel Richard) on behalf of the Board of Trustees and Dr. John Moore, Superintendent of Schools. At the Monday, December 11, 2023, Board of Trustees Meeting, Galena Park ISD (GPISD) recognized the North Shore Senior High School Marching Band for advancing to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Conference 6A State Marching Band Contest (SMBC). The NSSHS Band first placed 2^nd in the UIL Area F Marching Contest in the preliminary round of competition. They later placed 2^nd in the finals, which qualified them to advance to the UIL Conference 6A SMBC. This band embodies a community of excellence with their dedication and tireless efforts!

A medal and certificate were presented to each band member on behalf of the Board of Trustees and Dr. John Moore, Superintendent of Schools.

If you haven’t heard about the Super Star Buddy Relays, you can now read about the exciting and inclusive event in Texas School Business’ Bragging Rights Issue. Galena Park ISD is one of only twelve public school districts in Texas to have their innovative programs featured. The issue highlights the importance of public schools and the essential work that educators are committed to doing. Galena Park’s Super Star Buddy Relays was described as a day “without limits” by Dr. Mechelle Epps, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services. The Super Star Buddy Relays was an athletic meet for GPISD special-needs students where athletes were paired with non-disabled buddies who assisted in adapted physical challenges. Nearly 450 athletic pairs competed in challenges and supported one another during a fun-filled event. Students, teachers, and volunteers came together to host a unique event showcasing good sportsmanship and teamwork. The event was a huge success as connections to schools and peers were made while the District hosted a tremendous inclusionary program. The District was thrilled to see such a positive response and will continue the relays in 2024.

Exciting news for Galena Park ISD students–especially those who use our school-based health clinics! The Almatha Clark Taylor (ACT) Health Clinic/Legacy Community Health, which hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a brand-new facility just over a year ago, is now expanding its services to include dental care. The addition will provide students with access to much-needed dental services, improving not only their oral health but also their overall well-being.

The ACT Health Clinic, which services GPISD Pre-K to 12^th grade with health-related and behavioral health services, has been a tremendous asset to the school community. Regular preventive dental care is essential for good oral health so one can find and address problems earlier when they are easier to treat. With the addition of comprehensive pediatric dental care at ACT, GPISD students and their siblings will now have access to dental exams,x-rays, routine cleanings, extractions, fillings, and sealants.

This extension of services is a testament to the success of all our school-based clinics, which completed approximately 75,000 wellness and behavioral health visits this past year and their commitment to meeting the needs of GPISD students. By providing comprehensive care at little to no cost, The ACT Health Clinic is helping to ensure that students are healthy and ready to learn.

The Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees recognized Dr. Medhat El Nahas for volunteering his time to share career-focused insight with members of the North Shore Senior High 10^th Grade Center’s “Men of Greatness” Boy’s Club. 

Dr. El Nahas is an accomplished Mechanical Engineering Technology Professor in the University of Houston’s Technology Division of the Cullen College of Engineering. He is active in university affairs and currently serves in roles such as a senator in the University of Houston Faculty Senate, and as a member of the University of Houston’s Undergraduate and College of Technology Committees, University of Houston Scholarship and Financial Aid Advisory Committee, as a Co-Chair on the Mechanical Engineering Technology - Industry Advisory Board (IAB), and as a Faculty Mentor in the University of Houston College of Technology’s Research Experience For Teachers (RET) program.

In the Spring of 2023, Dr. Medhat El Nahas provided a rare opportunity for Galena Park ISD students to engage with a college professor of a major university and learn about the basics of engineering. The purpose of the “Men of Greatness” Boys Club is to support character development, leadership skills, and postsecondary planning for the young men of the North Shore Senior High 10^th Grade Center. Dr. Medhat El Nahas’ partnership supports those efforts while offering an invaluable opportunity to build a connection with an industry professional.

The Galena Park ISD school community packed the house to cheer on the Boys and Girls Clubs from every campus as they were recognized for receiving the 2023 Character.org Promising Practices Award. Promising Practices Awards highlight organizations that are moving away from conventional practices by developing and implementing innovative approaches. Galena Park ISD’s Boys and Girls Clubs demonstrated significant impact and are fully aligned with one or more of Character.org’s eleven Principles Framework for Schools: A Guide to Cultivating a Culture of Character. This year’s character development practices and initiatives included peer mentoring, service-learning, and conflict-resolution approaches. Many of the Promising Practices also involve parents and the local community. GPISD’s commitment to developing a comprehensive character initiative ensures students have access to a positive and appropriate adult role model through Boys and Girls Clubs, which are present on every campus.

In recognition of the brave men and women who have served our country, Galena Park ISD (GPISD) proudly hosted its annual Veterans Day Luncheon on Friday, November 10, 2023. The luncheon brought local veterans together in a warm and welcoming environment where they connected with each other and shared their experiences. It was a chance for the District to show its appreciation to veterans for their contributions to our country. This year’s luncheon included a delicious meal, a student essay winner reading her essay, a video salute to veterans, and musical selections from the North Shore Senior High School Show Choir–“Perfect Harmony.” This luncheon served as a wonderful opportunity for GPISD to show gratitude and respect for the amazing men and women who have served our country. We delighted in honoring their sacrifices, celebrating their achievements, and reminding them that their service is deeply appreciated and will never be forgotten.

Beginning with the Class of 2024, Galena Park Independent School District (GPISD) seniors in the top 50 percent of their graduating class will also earn automatic admission to Tarleton State University. As part of its Distinguished High School Partners program, Tarleton will waive ACT (American College Test) or SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) requirements for students in the top half of their class and application fees for students who qualify. GPISD and Tarleton leaders cemented the agreement by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on October 16^th.

We look forward to future endeavors together.”

 “Partnering with Galena Park ISD ensures that some of the brightest students in Texas have the opportunity for a high-quality university experience,” said Tarleton President James Hurley. “This partnership aligns with our commitment to be a first-choice institution for high school seniors in Texas.”

The President’s Guaranteed Scholarship Program assures first-time-in-college students graduating in the top half of their high school class between $500 and $4,000 in scholarships. Students graduating from one of Tarleton’s Distinguished High School Partners will receive an additional $500 or $1,000. Admitted freshmen must submit a general scholarship application to determine eligibility.

Many feel that educators are heroes; however, Galena Park ISD’s Board of Trustees had to take pause to recognize two special heroes. At the October 10, 2023, Board of Trustees meeting, Mr. Hector Perez, a GPISD Transportation Department Team Member, was recognized for his heroism. While operating Van 195 on the morning of October 3, 2023, Mr. Perez witnessed a vehicle rear-end a GPISD school bus. The vehicle caught fire upon impact. Mr. Perez retrieved a fire extinguisher from his van to put out the fire. However, the fire persisted; so Mr. Perez also used the bus’s fire extinguisher to finally put out the flames.

Also recognized was Ms. Melanie Gracia. Ms. Gracia was selected as the District 4 recipient of the 2023 Heroes for Children Award for the State Board of Education. Ms. Gracia is one of only 15 awardees statewide to receive this recognition for the outstanding volunteerism she has offered to GPISD. She served as the 2022-2023 president of the Woodland Acres Middle School Parent Teacher Association. She also organized fundraisers and created backgrounds and murals for the campus.

Award-winning children’s aviation book trilogy author, Graciela Tiscareño-Santo stopped by Galena Park ISD’s Galena Park Elementary School and Havard Elementary School STEM Academies to inspire and encourage students. Given the name “Captain Mama’” by her son when he first saw her in her flight suit, Harvard students sat in awe of her experience refueling Air Force jets and reveled in the opportunity to try on the author’s flight suits. The aviation-themed assembly and campus engagement event was also sure to inspire STEM students to pursue their dreams while confidently facing challenges that may come their way. Tiscareño-Santo’s visit left a lasting impression on the students, who asked thoughtful questions and shared their own ideas. Captain Mama showed GPISD students that anything is possible with hard work, dedication, and a love for STEM. Students were inspired to strive for excellence in all they do.

Other interested students can meet Tiscareño-Sato at Houston’s annual CAF Wings Over Houston airshow, October 14 - 15, 2023. The airshow will take place at Ellington Field from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days. 

Galena Park ISD continued the tradition of inviting fathers and father figures to participate in Fathers Take Your Child to School Day on Thursday, October 5, 2023. Fathers and father figures throughout the community took an active role in their child’s education by accompanying them to school. Fathers Take Your Child to School Day is an opportunity for fathers to connect with their child’s school staff. This can also help fathers to better support their child’s education at home and to address their child’s needs at school. Many campuses provided breakfast, took fun photos, and made presentations to the fathers as they began the day with their children. We were excited to see our fathers and father figures being involved in their child’s education and their commitment to their child’s academic success.

Galena Park ISD (GPISD) joins schools across Texas that will celebrate agriculture throughout the month of October. We will eat local, teach local, and be social by serving Texas-grown foods, offering agricultural learning opportunities, and sharing our celebrations on social media. Commissioner Sid Miller and the Texas Department of Agriculture are committed to introducing Texans to local foods and supporting Texas farmers and ranchers, which is part of the reason for Miller’s Farm Fresh Challenge for School Nutrition programs Throughout Texas. GPISD readily accepted the challenge and will prioritize agriculture education and Texas foods as a way for schools to strengthen local economies and recognize the efforts of Texas farmers and ranchers. The Galena Park ISD Student Nutrition Services received the “Best of the Bunch” Recognition for completing the Farm Fresh Challenge during the 2022-2023 school year, and we look forward to recognition for the 2023-204 school year.

Celebrated every October, National Principals Month is an opportunity for district leaders, elected officials, parents, students, teachers, staff, school leaders, and communities to celebrate and honor our incredible principals for their visionary leadership and tireless pursuit of success for each student. National Principals Month is a collaboration between the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), and the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA). Ana Hernandez, State Representative for District 143, partnered with Monica Glover, The Port of Houston’s Senior Manager for Government Relations, to provide 200 backpacks to the students at Woodland Acres Elementary School (WAES)! This donation supports the education of WAES students and allows them to focus on their education at school and home. This partnership and donation exemplify a commitment to improving the lives of Galena Park ISD students. The donation was accepted by WAES students, Assistant Principal Alaide Zavala, Harris County Precinct 2 School Resource Officer Carl Smith, Principal Sandra Rodriguez, and Superintendent Dr. John Moore.
